The emotional ride: edge-of-your-seat stuff. It’s easy to feel for Marlon from the beginning. I think having the first scene be what is so clearly a first date makes him so vulnerable that we readers easily identify with him and see what a fish out of water he is when everything starts getting serious. The dangerous reality of drug pushing and youths being forced into dealing is an important topic, but Lawrence hasn't set out to preach to a society that needs warning. She's simply written a pacey crime thriller that feels unique, realistic and truthful. Patrice was born in Brighton, raised in an Italian-Trinidadian family in mid-Sussex, and now lives on the South Coast. For a lot of the book Marlon is misunderstood by his peers, family, and the police, and this made him very easy to empathise with because the reader is privy to his inner thoughts and thus knows his true intentions. Other characters, however, don't have access to these thoughts and that's how misunderstandings arise. A young man has an impossible choice to make, in this powerful coming of age urban thriller. Sixteen-year-old Marlon has made his mum a promise - he'll never follow his big brother, Andre, down the wrong path. So far, it's been easy, but when a date ends in tragedy, Marlon finds himself hunted.okay technically i didnt read this in 2021. but when i DID read this, i didnt have goodreads sooo I'll claim it for now. This book is incredibly fast paced. It's edge-of-your-seat thrilling, with a smattering of frustration and a fist-fight of violence.
