The yellow bear and his friends are celebrating seven decades in showbusiness this year and, in many ways, they are bigger than ever. The Sooty show, presented by Cadell, is still shown every day on ITVBe. The gang – Sooty, Sweep and the panda Soo – perform live up and down the country. And this summer sees the opening of Sooty Land, a multi-ride attraction at Crealy Theme Park in Exeter. As well as outdoor rides and various indoor activities, the venue will feature a museum full of sets and props from the TV series, including Sooty’s bedroom, bathroom and campervan. Sweep, also white not grey, who walked on all fours like a normal dog, but could stand as a biped to play the bugle and so on.

Sooty is a British Teddy Bear popular in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and other countries. Cadell made his first appearance on The Sooty Show as a 15-year-old guest performer when he was named Young Magician of the Year by the Magic Circle. He forged lifelong friendships with the team and when Matthew, who is now 74, hung up his gloves in 1999, he suggested Cadell as his replacement. From 2005 to 2008, annual shows, featuring the puppet characters and various different presenters, toured around the UK.

He added: “I was only about three when dad bought Sooty home in 1979 or 1980. At the time my family lived in Carshalton, south London, near the Thames studios. Sandford, Longman and Cadell have such a comfortable comedic bond that even an interview comes to resemble a Sooty episode. Sooty appeared on Kellogg's "Puffa Sugar Stars" cereal in the 1960s, then on "Puffa Puffa Rice" cereal starting in 1973.
