I had a gas BBQ many years ago and have been cooking on coals for over 10 years but had forgotten how easy it is to cook on gas. The stainless steel burner tent is designed to protect the burners from any dripping juices and helps to disperse heat evenly across the grill too. Char-Broil offers a five-year warranty on the stainless steel burners and all other parts are covered for two years, which is pretty generous.
Bundled in is a cleaning notch and microfibre cloth, though there's no point being precious here as it will no longer look pristine after the first use. But you want it to look rugged and outdoorsy, anyway, right? Pro tip: you might lose a sausage or two through the quite wide gaps between the bars, so be careful with your placements or your banger selection. Refreshingly, it requires almost no assembly, in fact, all you need to do is screw in the AA battery (included) into the ignition, attach a gas bottle, slot in the dishwasher safe grease guards around the outside and place the enamelled cast-iron grill plates on top. We were up and cooking in under half an hour. For the drama of a smokey barbecue and the longevity of the heat, I'd opt for charcoal grilling when entertaining for a crowd, because it's a less gas-intensive way of cooking and there's little risk of fuel running out. The Char-Griller Duo is a streamlined model that does away with infrared burners and smoking components. Instead, the grill boasts a propane and gas unit that is seriously impressive. There are probably very methodical ways to carefully take out all of the components and lay them out grouped together, but I take a slightly more slap-dash approach to these things and, after five minutes, had everything unboxed and spread out over the lawn.
How much does a BBQ cost to run?
First, you need to fill the charcoal tray with a single layer of coals, then put both gas burners on their highest setting and close the lid. At 120.9cm high and 54cm long, the Professional Pro S 3 is quite a large model - and you will need room outside to store it - it does come with wheels so it’s easy to position. We particularly like the way a gas canister – up to an ample 11kg - can be neatly housed underneath the barbecue - as opposed to the side. The side shelf can also be folded down after use and the barbecue comes with a cover to place over it to protect it. There’s also a handy display to tell you how full the gas bottle is, which means there are no excuses if you run out of juice mid garden party. The hooks for cutlery on the doors and integrated beer bottle opener on its body are also a nice touch.
