With this hands-on make a rainbow activity, students use a glass container of water, the sun, and sheets of white and colored paper, to cast and examine rainbows. They learn about white light and how refraction and reflection create the colors we see in a rainbow. How many colors will they see in their rainbows? The sodium carbonate and hydrochloric acid react, with effervescence, and the burette will be filled with liquid showing a ‘rainbow’ of all the colours of Universal indicator from red through orange, yellow, green and blue to purple. A rainbow is made up of the seven white light colors that are visible to the human eye, ROY G BIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet). Often times, we see rainbows after or during storms when the sun reflects off of the water to create such white light. Sometimes, when we have the sprinkler on and happen to walk by, we can see the same process occurring. So, how will we be able to create these same colors in our chemistry classroom?
