About this deal

If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of cabling, you can consider the Yamaha UD-BT01 wireless MIDI adapter. That said, the overall feel of the keys are extremely similar, and I probably would have missed the different action if I didn’t know what to look for.

The Yamaha YDP-144, on the other hand is designed for home use. Compared to the previous model, the design hasn’t changed much overall. It has built in stereo speakers and a full 88-key keyboard. It’s just what you need for home, or anyway use in a fixed location. The dimensions are certainly not recommending it for transportation (it is a cabinet style digital piano), and its weight neither. It ways 83 pounds, which makes it pretty uncomfortable to move move around. With the Yamaha YDP-144 and this useful feature, the Stereophonic Optimizer, this weakness seems to be a matter of the past. This technology enables you to play the piano with headphones on, and have a similar sound experience as you would when not using headphones. To be clearer, the sound you hear doesn’t seem to be in your ear, but rather coming from the piano, a surround sound, if you will. The experience is supposed to be as authentic and immersive as possible. Sustain (Switch), Sustain Contin uously, Sostenuto, Soft, Expression, Pitch Bend Up, Pitch Bend Down, Rotary Speed, Vibe Rotor, Song Play/PauseMetronome. Pressing the metronome button activates the built-in metronome. You can change the metronome’s tempo, time signature and volume. These grand piano sounds are definitely the biggest upgrade in the YDP-144 over its predecessor, the YDP-143. As you can see, there are a total of 10 different sounds on this digital piano. As said, the number is not that impressive, but the quality surely is. Yamaha P-144 Key Action

There are also harpsichord and vibraphone sounds included. Yamaha has always provided good sampled versions of these sounds, so it’s no surprise that these continue that tradition.

IMPORTANT SHOPPING TIPS!

The sounds are comparable to the CLP-series piano I own at home, with a barely noticeable reduction in the low-end frequencies and “boldness” of the sound (probably due to the smaller cabinet size). This type of functionality is also available on all other major brands in this price range. You can also use a feature called DUO which allows the 88-note keyboard to be electronically split into 2 44-note keyboards so that 2 people can play the same song and hearing it in the same octave. This feature is not exclusive to Yamaha and although it can be a useful feature, it also isn't used very often unless you have 2 people in the same home or a teacher-student in-home lesson or in a church, school, etc, with 2 people practicing the same song and they want to practice together at the same time hearing the same notes even though they are playing in different octaves.
