This book is not at all what I expected, but Mr. Grumpy McGrump certainly lives up to its reputation. From this wordsmith’s books, I usually expect a light-hearted rom-com with a good hero and lively heroine, and this book is light years beyond that. I got her fired. Okay, so I’d had a bad day and took it out on a bystander in a pizza shop. But there’s nothing innocent about Ally Morales. She proves that the first day at her new job… in my office… after being hired by my mother. It’s pretty obvious that Lucy Score and I have very different preferences when it comes to hot and lovable love interests so I better go look somewhere else to read about mine.

There is a lot in this story that rings very current and true. It is handled well as nothing is perfect, it is dealt with in the manner all too much as it has been in the past. What works so well is the way growth happens and the care given in confronting it. I found Dom behind his desk in our office. He was in sweatpants and a t-shirt that showed off his unfairly fine form. His hair had started to go gray, and I was obsessed with the deepening crinkles in the corners of his eyes. Fifty-five looked good on the man.Ally (h) and Dominic (H) are quite immature for their age (39 & 44) and I can understand why other ppl didn’t like their characters, but I was LOVING how petty they were with each other. 😂 it’s really not how adults with that age should behave, but I’m blind and going to pretend that each of the characters was at least 10 years younger to justify some of their behavior. The secondary characters are brilliantly written and I loved all the different dynamics and relationships. Faith and Christian fascinated me - I hope they get their own story. Can I also please give special mention to the gorgeous Brownie. What a darling. Cheating? No. Nope. Cheating was never going to happen because these two are so passionate about each other and so loyal. No, people, I didn’t have triplets at forty-one. After that pregnancy, I wasn’t delusional enough to beg Dom to put more babies in me.
