About this deal

The Nikon COOLPIX P530 looks every bit like the P520 it replaces. It’s pretty compact for a 42x super-zoom and in fact is slightly smaller than its predecessor and around 50g lighter. The design, right down to the number and placement of the controls is more or less identical though.

Overall, images match the quality of most smartphones in today’s market. And in good light, the camera provides excellent photos and videos, with the benefit of a superior zoom range over a smartphone. Images are reasonably sharp, well saturated, and have good color reproduction. W]: Approx. 50 cm (1 ft 8 in.) to infinity, [T]: Approx. 1.5 m (5 ft) to infinity; Macro close-up mode: Approx. 1 cm (0.4 in.) (at a wide-angle zoom position) to infinity (All distances measured from center of front surface of lens) The Nikon Coolpix P520 allows you to get as close as 1cm to your subject, in this case a Compact Flash card. Ordinarily, this kind of additional stabilisation is reserved for movie shooting and it’s a little odd to provide two levels of stabilisation for stills shooting, if there’s a more effective option, why not just include that and forget about the less effective one? One possible reason is that Active mode consumes significantly more power or employs some additional digital compensation that could slightly degrade the quality. In my tests with the earlier P520 I didn’t gain any advantage over Normal mode when shooting the test scene in Active mode, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t yield better result in situations like those mentioned in the manual. Take a look at my Nikon COOLPIX P520 review if you want to find out more. For video, it shoots 1080p full HD video up to 30 fps. And it also supplies the lower quality interlaced format at 60 fps, for moments, slow-motion capture are necessities. Overall, video quality, while not the sharpest, is good for this price point and this class of camera. Low Light Performance Remaining battery power on the COOLPIX P520 is indicated by a three-segment graphic. I found the 200 shot capacity of the COOLPIX P520 quite a limitation, with the low battery indicator appearing all too soon when out shooting for the day. Even for casual snappers, at an event like a wedding, or party the COOLPIX P520 is likely to give up before you’re ready to, and that’s assuming you have a full charge to begin with. I’d strongly recommend you buy at least one additional battery along with the camera. Look at it this way, with a spare battery you still get only the same shooting capacity as the Lumix FZ70 / FZ72 with a single one. Given the range of the zoom lens, the Nikon Coolpix P520 shows remarkably little purple fringing, with limited effects in areas of high contrast as shown in the examples below. It’s not a whole lot of fun to use, either. Autofocus was lethargic, taking at least half a second, and up to three seconds in low light or at the long end of the zoom. Even in favourable conditions with a bright, nearby subject, it only managed to capture a photo every 2.9 seconds. After zooming right in, we measured an average of 3.7 seconds. Anything above a second is disappointing, especially for a bridge camera that’s likely to be pointed at fleeting subjects.

When shooting there is auto mode which adjusts the camera settings automatically for the detected scene. You can also select from 19 scene modes or use the manual exposure modes (P/S/A/M). Other shooting modes include auto HDR, Easy Panorama 360°/180° and the lens has a minimum focusing distance of 1cm for shooting macros. In continuous shooting mode you can record at 7 fps for 7 frames or 30 full resolution shots at 1 fps. When you finished shooting you can edit your photos in the retouch menu, adding effects such as selective colour and cross screen. Measuring 125.2 x 84.1 x 101.6mm, the Nikon Coolpix P520 is slightly larger than the previous P510 model, but its design is only minimally different. Like most high-end superzooms, the Nikon P520 sports the typical bridge camera look, with a chunky hand-grip, large lens barrel, pop-up flash and an eye-level electronic viewfinder. The deep grip is moulded to fit comfortably into your right hand, and is rubberised in a textured material for added comfort. Soft, Nostalgic sepia, High-contrast monochrome, High ISO monochrome (ISO 12800), High key, Low key, Selective color, Silhouette, Cross process; Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome (customizable)The screen is impressive, it's 3.2 inch in size and has a 921k dot resolution. It rotates to make it easy to shoot with the camera in higher or lower positions. The electronic viewfinder is useful for when shooting with the zoom at a long length as it reduces camera shake, but it's quite small and has a low resolution. Electronic viewfinder, 0.5 cm (0.2-in.) approx. 201k-dot equivalent LCD with the diopter adjustment function (-4 to +4 m-1) Switch to the PASM modes and both the Command dial thumb wheel and multi-selector wheel are used to change the appropriate exposure control; the command dial engages program shift in Program auto (Canon take note – the SX520 HS doesn’t do this) and the shutter speed in Shutter priority and Manual modes. The multi selector wheel is allocated to the aperture in Aperture priority and Manual modes. The COOLPIX P520’s menu system is divided over four tabs, Shooting, Movie, GPS and Set up. The Shooting menu is a long list of 18 items, so changing something like the AF mode, or Active D-lighting, which are in the middle somewhere, can be a bit tedious. The COOLPIX P520 does have a single programmable function button, though, which can be assigned to one of nine functions including image quality, size, white balance, metering, continuous shooting, ISO sensitivity, AD area mode and Vibration reduction.
