About this deal

I love ACT, so it pains me to rate this less than 4 or 5 stars, but I would really hesitate to recommend it to any consumer with less than a master’s degree. Most definitely an essential text that should accompany all individuals as they traverse their teen years. The destination may be important, but the journey experienced day to day and week to week is what is invaluable.

I have a tendency to over intellectualize my emotions, which often means I don’t actually process them effectively. I’ve noticed in my own life that as my memory and verbal skills have increased, so has my pain/suffering. The writing style was a bit pedantic at times, particularly with arguments from definition by looking at the etymology of words. This is a slow, slow read, with too many exercies that do not lead you very far into understaning the authors aims.ACT uses acceptance and mindfulness processes and commitment and behavioral activation processes to produce psychological flexibility. Unfortunately, despite its many advantages, it also has a cost: Our minds are so effective at spotting and solving problems that they never seem to be able to stop, turning the problem-solving machine into a problem itself. The same is true for the pieces touching on Buddhist philosophy - I'd recommend "Fear" by Thich Nhat Hanh instead.

Literally already using it with adolescents and have tweaked some of the stuff just a tiny bit to make parts of it appropriate to use with adults--it brings everything down to the basic ACT principles in a way I haven't seen before. Or you might get into imaginary arguments with yourself, wondering what some person might say and trying to find powerful counterarguments for each point made.

For the readers who wish to delve more deeply into Haye’s theoretical approach, I would suggest looking up ‘Relational Frame Theory’. If you have no conceptualization of yourself, then you’re free to accept each moment as it is and you are free to accept whatever emotions arise in you as they are and let them go. But this is more than a self-help book for a specific complaint—it is a revolutionary approach to living a richer and more rewarding life.
