They're upgrades in some ways and - curiously - downgrades in others, at least in the case of the standard and Plus model, so it might not be as clear cut as the Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus being the best 'Plus' option. It isn’t quite as swift as the iPhone 11 Pro with its Apple A13 SoC but it’s fast enough to ensure snappy responsiveness in any task.

Performance is pretty swift as a result and, in the benchmarks, the S20 Plus put in a sterling performance. The S20 Plus forgoes its predecessor’s dual-lens front-facing camera array for a single 10MP shooter. The OnePlus 7T Pro, for example, has a triple camera array and a high-refresh-rate display, although it’s 90Hz versus the Samsung’s 120Hz.

Perhaps the most notable thing to pick out is that the Bixby button no longer sits, unused, on the left edge of the phone – although this is now activated by a long press of the power button. In our New York City testing, we bounced through Verizon’s still-piecemeal mmWave 5G area, which provided impressive speeds when we didn’t accidentally step outside the coverage bubbles. Given the S20 Plus connects to both mmWave and sub-6 5G, it’s a great phone for those who want to jump on the cutting edge of 5G – because, chances are, the phone will hook up to the 5G network of your carrier of choice. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus was a nearly-perfect smartphone when it launched, connecting to more 5G networks and offering better cameras than ever, though you had to pay for the privilege, as this was the priciest Plus smartphone yet. The S20 Plus' camera set differs from the smaller S20's in that it includes a fourth camera -- a time-of-flight depth sensor for bokeh mode.

As you’d expect from a flagship refresh, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus is flush with the very latest silicon. Otherwise, it’s all fairly standard stuff: volume rocker and power button sit on the right edge, the dual-purpose SIM and microSD card tray is on the top edge, the USB-C port and speaker grille are on the bottom and the selfie camera peeks out through a neat hole-punch cutout in the centre of the display just like on the Galaxy Note 10 Plus. However, of the three this is the phone that gives you the best bang for your buck with a larger display than the S20 and a bigger battery, plus 5G included as standard.Samsung has likewise boosted its Night mode with software tricks – and while our shot of the full moon at 30x digital zoom wasn’t very clear, the nocturnal mode still works at various levels of the S20 Plus’ zoom. The Galaxy S20+ has everything you need to take great pics thanks to a 64MP Telephoto Camera, 10MP Front Camera and 12MP Wide Camera. The difference between the two becomes even more obvious when you compare maximum zooms – 30x hybrid for the S20 Plus and 10x digital for the iPhone 11 Pro.
