About this deal

The Argon EON kickstarter was successfully funded in September 2021, with backers receiving their units in early 2022. I'm also thinking about picking up some cheap silicone thermal pads and slapping 'em on the side of the hard drives, where they mount to the back panel. If it's using a Compute Module 4 instead and just using "Raspberry Pi 4" for name recognition, it could swap the USB-to-SATA bridge for a PCIe SATA controller - which would drop the overhead considerably. I'm generally quite pleased, but I do disagree with the author of the review about the ease of use of OpenMediaVault.

There is a significant heft to the enclosure and feels just like something that should hold a chunk of your digitised life.To get inside the Argon EON, we need to remove the two acrylic panels and then using the included screwdriver (something we have since coveted more so than our more expensive drivers) remove the back panel.

When you look at the NAS-enabled enclosure like this, it’s hard not to pick the most powerful Raspberry Pi in the rooster: Raspberry Pi 4 8GB RAM. What we can say is that it works exceptionally well with the Argon EON and there are lots of tutorials to help set up your first NAS. A fan provides cooling for the entire unit, and the top-mounted power switch is a small OLED screen that can be customised to display anything, such as IP address or CPU temperature. As Raspberry Pi 4 removed the primary bottleneck by introducing 1Gbit Ethernet it’s officially “enough” for home use (and enterprise if you are into clusters). I appreciate the work that was put into the documentation but its not really self explaining for a newbe. He is a creative technologist and for seven years has created projects to educate and inspire minds both young and old.

When setup in the Argon-EON, that single board computer has 4 SSD’s attached, and can boot from an 5th device. It seems to run quieter… but that may just be wishful thinking… Running a non-standard fan that already has bearings fail. This has worked well, but I would like to clean up my network a bit (less devices, more organized, less maintenance, less complexity). It offers a perfectly reasonable home NAS while not limiting itself to network storage use cases only. Unaware of that (as my Argon Eon was constantly connected to the network) I run into some troubles caused by my NAS’ time being constantly reset to 2020! If the case above - which I haven't looked into yet - is using an unmodified Raspberry Pi 4, as the title suggests, then it'll be connecting all four hard drives over a single USB 3. The only restrictions on the unit are the computing power of a raspberry pi so if the pi can do it so can the EON but keep in mind the pi is a basic single board computer, it’s only capable of so much.
