However, I chose to paint the oranges next instead so that I didn’t run the risk of having the black bleed into the orange as I applied that around it in the eye.

With the previous layer dry, I used the darkest orange tones and midtone orange mixes again to make tonal adjustments. I used my size 000 brush to apply these mixes, making sure to stipple and leave gaps through to my original and previous layers lighter areas were required. Working with pale paint mixes like this also means we can layer up to get dark enough, achieving texture with our brush markings and adjusting our mixes as we gradually build up the painting. I left the black line around the edge of the eye as I knew I’d want to darken the frog’s skin around that, and so it would be best added at the end so as to avoid it bleeding into the greens. There were lots of variations of hue within the frog’s skin so I mixed a base of Permanent Sap Green and Winsor Blue (Green Shade), adding Winsor Lemon for yellow-greens, or Winsor Lemon and Cobalt Turquoise Light for the blue-greens.

I applied it with a size 1 brush and stippled the paint a little to recreate the rough texture of the frog’s skin.
